These practice purpose tools — sage, incense, oils, and crystals — are traditionally used as a way of preparing both the space and the self to be more receptive: clearing what's stagnant or heavy, inviting in a sense of calm, and sharpening focus before meditation or spirit work. The underlying idea across most of these traditions is that the universe (or spirit, or the divine, however someone frames it) is always communicating — through subtle shifts in energy, intuition, symbols, or synchronicities — but everyday noise and distraction make that communication hard to notice. Cleansing and grounding practices are meant to quiet that noise, so a person is more attuned to whatever they believe is trying to reach them. Whether or not there's a literal transmission happening, many people find that the ritual itself — the intention, the slowing down, the attention to detail — creates a felt sense of connection and openness that's meaningful on its own terms.
Smudging Essentials
White Sage — the most common Western smudging herb; associated with general cleansing and clearing negative energy from a space before ritual.
Palo Santo — "holy wood," used similarly to sage but considered gentler; associated with clearing while also inviting positive energy in (not just removing negative).
Cedar — used in many Indigenous traditions for protection and grounding; often burned when someone wants a more "settled" feeling rather than a full clearing.
Sweetgrass — traditionally burned after sage/cedar, not before — the idea being you clear first, then invite in good spirits with something sweet-smelling.
How it's typically done: light until it smolders (blow out the flame, let it smoke), move it clockwise around the space or around your own body, let smoke drift into corners, close by opening a window briefly.
Incense for Spirit Work
-
- Frankincense — considered one of the most "sacred" scents across traditions; used to raise the vibration of a space, common in altar work generally
- Myrrh — often paired with frankincense; associated with protection and grounding, sometimes used specifically for ancestor work
- Copal — used heavily in Latin American traditions, considered a bridge between the earthly and spirit worlds
Sandalwood — associated with meditation and opening awareness/intuition
Essential Oils
-
- Frankincense oil — anointing for spiritual protection and connection
- Rosemary oil — mental clarity, sometimes used before divination
- Lavender oil — calming, used to ease into meditative states
- Clove oil — associated in some folk traditions with psychic ability and communication
- Lemon oil — associated with purification and clearing mental fog; used to brighten a space's energy before ritual
- Rose oil — linked to love, comfort, and connecting with loved ones who've passed; often used in ancestor or grief-related work specifically
- Peppermint oil — associated with mental alertness and boosting energy/focus during meditation; some traditions use it to "energize" a space rather than calm it
- Sage oil — the liquid counterpart to smudging with sage leaf; used for cleansing and protection when burning isn't practical or allowed
Crystals for Meditation & "Spirit Communication"
Purple crystals (Amethyst) — the most commonly cited stone for psychic connection, intuition, and communicating with spirit; associated with the "third eye"/higher awareness in most crystal traditions.
White crystals (Clear Quartz, Selenite) — considered "master healer" and all-purpose stones; Selenite specifically is associated with cleansing other crystals and spaces, and connecting with higher/angelic energy.
Green crystals (Green Aventurine, Jade) — associated with heart-centered energy, growth, and sometimes used to connect with nature spirits specifically rather than human ancestors.
Yellow crystals (Citrine) — associated with clarity of thought and confidence; used more for personal empowerment than direct spirit contact in most traditions.
Blue crystals (Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite) — associated with communication generally, and specifically throat-chakra work; some traditions use blue stones when trying to "give voice" to messages received.
Black crystals (Black Tourmaline, Obsidian) — protection-focused; often placed at the edges of a space or carried during spirit work to guard against unwanted energy.
